Couggars Lose to Cave Spring
October 19, 2009 - Rick Watson

I have been trying to think of something positive to write about the latest Pulaski County loss this past Friday night at Cave Spring. And after further review, the only thing I can come up with is that nobody melted in the rain. The Cougars did many things right offensively once again in the 42-34 defeat but the defense had no answer for the Knights power running game. And now with the losing streak at four consecutive games, Pulaski County (2-5,0-2) once again must pick itself up as best they can and get ready for their return trip to Bogle Field this coming Friday.

There are few times I can remember in Cougar history when a 14 point lead turned into a two touchdown deficit in only a half of a quarter of play. But that is indeed what happened against Cave Spring as a 28-14 advantage for the Cougars became a 42-28 lead for the Knights and there was nothing the Cougars defense could do to stop the bleeding. There were more very costly turnovers that the Knights took advantage of and the penalty yardage mounted throughout the game for the second consecutive week. And the result of the dramatic turn of fortunes was easily the most frustrating loss of the season to date for Pulaski County.

I give tremendous credit to Tim Fulton and his Cave Spring team that kept being aggressive on their home field despite trailing for much of the game through the first three quarters. The Knights (6-1,1-1) kept battling, as good teams do, which gave them the chance to capitalize on the opportunities they were handed and then their offensive execution worked to perfection. Sometimes the toughest thing to do is give credit to an opponent after a bitterly disappointing defeat, but in this case, Cave Spring deserves the credit for taking the game back from the Cougars when all seemed lost.

But even without the services of top rusher Ramell Cobbs, Pulaski County moved the football with great success throughout the football game. Jolly Martin came up in a huge way with his four touchdowns and the offensive line had one of its best performances of the season. These are the types of things that I hope the team can look at with the understanding of what it took to develop that type of success against Cave Spring.

This week becomes the most important to date during practice preparations for Hidden Valley. The Cougars cannot cash in the season and have to find some way to string four quarters of good football together to end the losing streak. And all that awaits Pulaski County this week is the region’s top running back in Hidden Valley’s David Williams who has already rushed for over 1500 yards for the Titans. But again, the Cougars must be concerned with themselves and correcting the things that went wrong against Cave Spring.
